Kitchen Weeks 2 & 3

It's been a busy month at work, so not much happening on the kitchen until the weekend. Here I work on creating a level base for the cabinets.
Each strip of wood is placed at the edges of where a base cabinet will be located, leveled with shims, then nailed in place.
The fridge will be to the left, with a pantry cabinet next to it. Next to the pantry will be an 18" cabinet.
The electrical work starts with weekend #3. Here I prepare to install an outlet for our new sink disposal. The rule of thumb is to locate the outlet a hammer's length up from the floor.
I punch a hole in the wall near the floor, and at the outlet location and feed the 12/2 Romex into the basement. The circuit panel is conveniently located just below the kitchen.
I use a surface mounted box to house the new GFCI outlet. Now all I have to do is install the new circuit into the panel.
I spent most of Saturday in the attic moving insulation out of the way in preparation for the can light installation. It took us a while to figure out where to put the new can lights, as well.

The can lights will replace the light in the middle of the room. The wiring was a little tricky, so I make sure to take pictures and lots of notes. Power comes in from the panel, goes to a switch and also the next room. Don't want to screw this up.
After cutting the holes for the can lights, I head back up into the attic to sweat off a few pounds and feed wires for the new circuit. The four can lights will be LED and only consume 10.5 watts each. They replace a 40 watt fluorescent fixture, so by inspection, we shouldn't be overloading the existing circuit!
Replacing one light with four was a little tricky, so I was a little nervous. After wiring up the can lights, I installed some spare bulbs and prepared for the test. They work!!!
I slipped the cans into the ceiling. It's amazing how much better they light the kitchen.
With perfect timing, Home Depot had a granite sale this weekend. We made an appointment with our Kitchen Designer 'Annie' at the Fraser HD, and picked our color. We settled on 'Blue Sapphire'. Can't wait to see it in place!
